Statement on the announcement of final results of the referendum on the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement
Yesterday, April 6, the Dutch Election Commission announced the official results of vote count of the consultative referendum on the ratification of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. The preliminary negative outcome of the referendum was, unfortunately, confirmed.
We would like to cordially thank all those, who on April 6 came and cast their vote in support of the united Europe. Your solidarity, understanding and compassion are priceless to us!
We also warmly thank all the people, who had been campaigning for Ukraine during the last half a year. Especially it is the Ukrainian community in the Netherlands, who have made a tremendous effort to open Ukraine to the Dutch. Despite the referendum result, we are sure this effort is yet to yield its results in the long run.
Last but not the least we thank all those in Ukraine – civil society members, public and religious leaders, politicians – who had felt they should be here in the Netherlands helping to tell the Dutch about Ukraine and the Association Agreement and came to do so. We are positive the people-to-people contacts you have established during your visits will help us promote Ukraine and build a deeper trust between Ukrainians and the Dutch.
It is up to the Government and Parliament of the Netherlands now to suggest the most suitable solution in order to finalize the ratification process of the Agreement.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues provisional application of the Association, as well as the domestic implementation of the Agreement's core principles of democracy, human rights, transparency, rule of law, European values and standards as a road map of modernization, improvement of legislation, fight against corruption, reinforcement of our sovereignty and independence, and simply making the lives of Ukrainians better.
