Delegation of Ukraine participates in the second part of the XXV session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention
On 20-22 of April, 2021 the second part of the Twenty-Fifth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CSP-25) take place in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Representatives of the States Parties to the Convention, relevant international institutions and NGOs attend the events.
In the course of the sessions, the States Parties consider a broad range of issues relating to the elimination of chemical weapons, maintaining efficient CWC verification regime, development of international cooperation in the field of peaceful chemistry, as well as effective national implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The aim of the sessions is also to consider the recent cases of the chemical weapons use in a number of countries, and to adopt the mechanism to prevent such an use in the future.
One of the most resonant issues of the Conference's agenda is the decision to impose the sanctions envisaged by the CWC on the Syrian Arab Republic in response to the proven by Investigation and Identification Team facts of the chemical weapons or toxic chemicals as a weapons use, as well as the fact of an attempt to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Ukraine has decided to become a co-sponsor of the decision on Syria and a joint statement on Navalny's poisoning.
Ukraine consistently advocates a position on the importance of full and irreversible chemical disarmament under effective international control and considers the Chemical Weapons Convention as an effective instrument in this area. All responsible in the chemical weapons use must be held accountable.
