From September 23 till October 5, 2024, oral hearings on the merits were held at the Arbitration Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (The Hague) in the dispute concerning coastal state rights in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Kerch Strait (Ukraine v. the russian federation).

Ukraine initiated this case on 14 September 2016, with a view to reinstate its rights in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and the Kerch Strait.

Ukraine’s delegation aimed to demonstrate russia’s numerous violations of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, particularly regarding freedom of navigation, transit passage, protection of the marine environment, and underwater cultural heritage.
