
On 6-7July 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Caspar Veldkamp and Minister of Defence of the Netherlands Ruben Brekelmans payed a visit to Ukraine. The program included a series of events in Kyiv and Odesa. It was the first foreign visit of high-ranking officials of the new Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with both ministers. The Head of state briefed both Dutch ministers on the systemic shelling of civilian critical infrastructure by the Russian Federation, which is resulting in the numerous casualties of Ukrainian civilians. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukrainian air defence. He also expressed gratitude to the Netherlands for the unwavering and strong support of Ukraine from the very outset of the full-scale Russian invasion: "the Netherlands has opened extremely important pages in the protection of our lives. Namely, this concerns the strengthening of our air defence and transferring F-16 fighter jets."
Negotiations were also held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba and his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp. The Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov met with Dutch Minister of Defence Ruben Brekelmans.
Ukraine greatly appreciated that the Dutch ministers made their first foreign visit to Ukraine. This is a significant manifestation of solidarity, a clear confirmation of respect and unwavering support for Ukraine from the Netherlands.
